Worst Case - The IRS Visit

The bullet proof vest for a small number of IRS agents that pursue high level tax crimes.

An IRS Visit

Until recently, the IRS had two types of in-person unannounced visits:

  • An IRS revenue officer visiting homes and businesses of taxpayers with unpaid taxes due.

  • A team of IRS-CI officers (likely with the support of local police) serving a search warrant on a business or person being investigated for massive tax fraud issues.

On Monday, July 24, 2023, the IRS transformed the unpaid collections process by eliminated revenue officer visits. The changes are effective immediately and will be replaced with mailed letters to schedule meetings.

So moving forward, if you ever have an IRS agent knock on your door:

  • They are a fake. You can kindly ask them to leave and mail you a letter in regards to any issue.

    or

  • They will have a search warrant, be wearing the bullet proof vest as above and likely have police back-up. You have been up to something very naughty and should use your one phone call to call your attorney.

If you do receive an IRS notice via the mail (snail mail, not an email) requesting more information or to schedule a meeting, please do NOT ignore. Contact your tax professional to work on a timely response. Most IRS inquires involve one or two specific issues and can be resolved easily via mail or phone if handled in a timely manner.
